Found this lovely little stop motion music video via colossal blog.

Directed by Erez Horovitz. "A team of nearly twenty artists, editors, directors and product assistants ushered the video into being. The group started with storyboarding and computer animation before converting the digital graphics to paper cutouts (frame by frame), photographing those 12,000 cutouts and then stitching them together into four minutes of paper animation." from colossal.

I would just like to start off by saying I could make this post a gazillion times longer than what you see here. The man by the name of Mac Premo has wow'd my senses with his erratic sense of humor and inventive art pieces covering all things from video to wall. Behold his many facets of energy below...

BUT FIRST! (here I go with my protracting ramble) Premo did a little art installation called "The Dumpster Project" wherein he basically came to a realization of owning too many things and had to give them one last look at the collective world before taking a dive.

Have you heard of Sketchtravel yet? If not, I suggest you get to know this little project. The first Sketchtravel started in October of 2006 by illustrators Gerald Guerlais and Dice Tsutsumi, and ended in November 2010. The book traveled all over the world and landed in the hands of 70 of the most talented artists in the fields of comics, illustration, and animation. I had a chance to hear the team of sketch-makers talk about the making of the first book and i was blown away by the amount of work and dedication these artists put into this project.

A new book has been started and Christophe is the first contributor! I can't wait to buy a copy of the first edition and watch the journey of the second. Check out a little making of preview below.

Some of you may know the name Mary Blair and some of you may not. But if you've ever been to "Tomorrowland" or inside the tunnel of "It's a Small World", you have definitely stumbled upon the work of this wonderful artist and illustrator. Blair created some of the earliest concept art for the Walt Disney Company including Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. Art Blocks for Ghana

The Picture Book Project Foundation is a wonderful organization that raises funds for children in need all over the world, and their latest project is Art Blocks for Ghana - a charity art auction of original works created by some of the best artists working in the art and animation industry today (DreamWorks Animation, Pixar Animation Studios, Blue Sky Studios, Marathon Media, ILM, Disney, Sony, Digital Domain, AOL Artists, as well as award-winning illustrators). Proceeds from the auction will help fund education and housing for children in Ghana, West Africa.

The preview night/opening reception will be held on March 12th in Los Angeles at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California. The official online auction will begin on March 12th, 2011. For more details, visit the Art Blocks blog and the Picture Book Foundation site.

I recently went to the LA Art Show premier night at the Downtown Convention Center. It was such a wonderful evening of sipping wine and viewing some wonderful pieces of artwork, ranging from graphic design, prints, paintings, and photography.

One artists that particularly stood out was a guy named Willy Rojas and his miniatures staging. I love how he transforms our simple everyday objects into a community of their own.

I love color, but there is something mysterious about a white walled room with subtle color splashes. The white brick wall has enough texture that it doesn't require color paint, and mixed with the velvet couches and patched loveseat - a cool room no longer means it can't be a warm living space. I was up in freezing Cleveland, Ohio last week visiting Jonny and getting some final Christmas shopping done. We went all over town to a couple of the best vintage shops in the city - namely Flower Child and Suite Loraine. I found these photographs at Suite Loraine and thought they were very intriguing.

It's interesting to look at photographs from back in the day because they did not care about composition, subject matter, or if anyone was even looking at the camera. I think I'm going to frame these.

Pencil Tips

Christophe sent these amazing photos to me today about an artist who carves miniatures (very mini miniatures) out of pencils and graphite. His name is Dalton Ghetti and his work is astounding.

“Mr. Ghetti, who owns about as many possessions as a monk, is aware how unusual his craft is. He started carving tree bark when he was a child and experimented with everything from soap to chalk before settling on graphite. It’s second nature now, and for 90 percent of his work, all he needs is a sewing needle, a razor blade and a carpenter’s or No. 2 pencil.

‘The pencil tip is great; it’s like a pure, very homogenous material,’ he said. ‘It cuts in the same direction, not like wood, which has a grain. But when I tell people how long it takes, that’s when they don’t believe it. That’s what amazes people more, the patience. Because everything nowadays has to be fast, fast, fast.’”

Holi - a celebration of color!

I was listening to NPR this morning when a story came on about the Indian festival of Holi. Basically, people gather together on the streets and paint themselves with beautiful pigments in celebration of the welcoming of spring and good overcoming evil.

I found the ritual so fascinating and dug up some photos from last year's festival in preparation for this coming Sunday's Holi celebration that will go until March 1st. I only wish I could be in India on this day...

i've been meaning to make this post for a while now. first, because this is some of the most fascinating art pieces that i've seen, and second because i've known the artist himself since i was a wee little 9 year old as he is my cousin's good friend from high school.

Sam Gibbons launched his art career in NYC a while back, and has been successfully featured in art magazines and exhibitions over the years. you can very easily get lost in the intricacy of his work, and the detail he adds to these darker images.

here is an except about his work: "Employing imagery that was originally intended to entertain and pacify, Gibbons' paintings are at war within themselves. The typical role of the cartoon is subverted; these benchmarks of inexperience are engaged in violent and sexual acts. Acting as allegories for the loss of innocence, Sam Gibbons' paintings exist as a complex and beautiful mimicry of the human condition."
